Gardy Brazela was born in Haiti, graduated from New York City public schools, and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science and a Masters in Urban Policy Administration degree from Brooklyn College, CUNY.
Mr. Brazela's mother fled the poverty of Haiti and successfully found work in the Bahamas which allowed her to send money home to support her family. After a seven-year separation Gardy--then twelve years old--and his mother were reunited, not in Haiti but in New York City.
He vowed then to spend his life serving others to honor sacrifices his mother had made for him, and for her family.
Gardy Brazela founded the United Youth Center where local youth learn computer skills, basic life skills, and homework/study habits, which all assist in later life success
A married man with three children, Mr. Brazela was first appointed a Community Board 18 member in 1997, and later was named chairperson of the Public Safety Committee. In 2019 he became Community Board 18 Chair. Mr. Barzela is the first Caribbean American and Black person to hold this important community decision making position.
Gardy Brazela has served since 1997 as a member of the 69th Precinct Community Council, rising from member to Corresponding Secretary, and Vice president. In January 2015, he became 69th Precinct Community Council President.
